The real reasons documentation gets skipped — and how to protect yourself from it.

Why documentation gets skipped

Documentation is often treated as overhead, especially when an MSP is rewarded for speed or billable hours.

In reality, documentation reduces downtime and makes support faster — for everyone.

  • No dedicated time in the contract
  • “Hero culture” instead of repeatable processes
  • Fear of being replaced if knowledge is shared

What you should ask for

Even a simple baseline is a big win. Start small and iterate.

  • Network diagram (sites, uplinks, VLANs, key devices)
  • IP plan and DHCP scopes
  • Firewall ruleset overview and VPN inventory
  • Admin access inventory + MFA status

How to bake it into managed services

Make documentation a deliverable, not a “nice to have.”

  • Define what artifacts you get at onboarding
  • Require updates after changes
  • Review quarterly and tie it to roadmap planning
